Thou art the ruler of the minds Of all the
people, dispenser of India's Destiny. Thy name
arouses the Hearts of Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat And
Maharashtra, Dravida And Orissa and Bengal; it
echoes In the hills of Vindhya and
Himalayas, mingles in the music of Jamuna and
Ganges and is chanted by the waves of the Indian
Ocean. They pray for thy blessings and Sing thy
praise. The saving Of all people waits in thy
hand. Thou dispenser of India's destiny. Victory,
victory, victory to thee. (English translation by

- Bangladesh "Amar Sonar Bangla"
Oh my precious Bangla, I adore you. Your sky, yur
breezes, eternally play a flute in my heart. Oh
mother-- In the spring, your mango groves
mesmerize me with their fragrance; In the autumn,
how bewitching is the smile of your lust harvest!
What a radiance, what a heaven! What warmth, what
enchantment! What anchal* have you laid at the
banyan's feet Along the banks of your rivers! Oh
mother-- As sweet as nectar is your utterance to
my ears; When yur face turns sad, my eyes drown
in tears. *anchal--part of the sari which a
mother may lay down for her child to rest upon.
(Translation by Amitava Sen, Atlanta, Ga.)
